Web server accelerator

Other web accelerators are targeted at the web site or web application owners. This type of web accelerator is installed in front of web servers and application servers and use a variety of the above techniques to improve performance to all users accessing the accelerated web sites or web applications. Sometimes referred to as a Reverse proxy.
These type of server side accelerators has the added benefit of off-loading transactions and connection managements from the web or applications servers and hence, reducing its CPU utilisation and increasing web server or application scalability to handle more users with less bandwidth.

Features

PDM allows users to automatically download any file types, divides downloads into multiple streams for faster downloading, batch downloading, Import and Export of download jobs, auto/manual update of download address, supports multiple queues and lists recent downloads for easy access to files. It can search for mirrors in order to increase download speeds and also supports downloading videos from many streaming video sites. The PDM algorithm includes dynamic segmentation throughout the downloading process. PDM supports HTTP, FTP, HTTPS and MMS protocols, Microsoft ISA and FTP proxy servers and authentication protocols like Basic, Negotiate, NTLM, and Kerberos allowing for storage and auto-authentication of user names and passwords.
The software ships in two versions. One is a free, 30-day trial (some versions are a 15-day trial). The application stops functioning at the end of the trial period unless a license is purchased. The other version is commercial for continual use. PDM works with Internet Explorer, Opera, Netscape Navigator, Apple Safari, Flock, Google Chrome, Mozilla, and Mozilla Firefox.

Techniques

Web accelerators may use several techniques to achieve this reduction:
They may cache recently or frequently accessed documents so they may be sent to the client with less latency or at a faster transfer rate than the remote server could.
They may freshen objects in the cache ensuring that frequently accessed content is readily available for display.
They may preemptively resolve hostnames present in a document (HTML or Javascript) in order to reduce latency.
They may prefetch documents that are likely to be accessed in the near future.
They may compress documents to a smaller size, for example by reducing the quality of images or by sending only what's changed since the document was last requested.
They may optimize the code from certain documents (such as HTML or Javascript).
They may filter out ads and other undesirable objects so they are not sent to the client at all.
They may maintain persistent TCP connections between the client and the proxy server.
They may improve the performance via protocol level accelerations, such as TCP acceleration.

Refresh Expired Links

One of the unique features found in PDM is its refresh expired links feature. When you download a file from certain sites they create a session for file downloads. If your internet connectivity is problematic then this feature will request you to refresh the link address if you try to download the same file from the start since the file won’t be available in the old link.

Getting the PDM summer school experience

First we make them submit a detailed and rigorous application. If they survive the first cut, we put them through their paces in a gruelling IDM HQ boot camp. Then there’s a tense wait while the judges vote, before the very best are called back to take part in the live shows. Or, to use the official title: the IDM Barrie Spelling Top Student Summer School!  Our latest Guest Blog spot goes to Owen Lee, who graduated this summer with a University of Sussex law degree. Owen was one of the bright young things who not only made it to Summer School - but survived to write the diary…

Smart smater smaterer

You may have noticed that the PDM recently teamed up with digital quiz people, Smarterer, by compiling a couple of quizzes  that test your marketing knowledge. One’s in social media, the other mobile. It’s a fun way to test yourself on what you know, and at the same time take on your colleagues in the race to the top of the leader board. There’s even a badge so you can show off your score on the social web! We fired a few questions at Smarterer CEO, Jennifer Fremont-Smith, to find out what they’re all about.

Pocket internet donwload manager

Pocket Download Manager (PDM) is a tool to increase download speeds by up to 5 times, resume and schedule downloads. Comprehensive error recovery and resume capability will restart broken or interrupted downloads due to lost connections, network problems, computer shutdowns, or unexpected power outages. Simple graphic user interface makes PDM user friendly and easy to use.Pocket Download Manager has a smart download logic accelerator that features intelligent dynamic file segmentation and safe multipart downloading technology to accelerate your downloads. Unlike other download managers and accelerators Pocket Download Manager segments downloaded files dynamically during download process and reuses available connections without additional connect and login stages to achieve best acceleration performance.
